Four-Point Charter of Demands Seeks Journalists’ Safety and Facilities in Mayurbhanj

Demand for Press Rooms from District Collector’s Office to Block Level, Swift Action Against Perpetrators Baripada, Mayurbhanj: A four-point charter of demands has been submitted seeking better security, essential workplace facilities and improved access to information for journalists working in Mayurbhanj district. The memorandum highlights the difficulties and security risks journalists reportedly face while collecting news and bringing public grievances to the attention of the authorities. The demands emphasise the need to create a suitable working environment for journalists and strengthen coordination between the media, administration and police. Establishment of Press Rooms The memorandum points out that the absence of dedicated press rooms at the District Collector’s Office, Sub-Collector’s offices and block offices creates difficulties for journalists in gathering news and carrying out their daily professional responsibilities. It has therefore demanded the establishment of dedicated press rooms at the district, sub-divisional and block levels. Journalists’ Security and Action Against Attackers Concern has been expressed over incidents in which journalists in the district allegedly face harassment and attacks by mafias and anti-social elements. According to the memorandum, affected journalists and their families are often forced to live in fear and insecurity. The demands include an impartial and high-level investigation into attacks on journalists and immediate legal action against those found responsible. Timely Information and Responses from Officials Journalists have reportedly faced difficulties in preparing news reports due to delays in receiving information and official responses from government departments and police authorities. The memorandum demands that concerned officials at the block, sub-divisional and district levels provide accurate information in a timely manner, in accordance with applicable rules, and issue responses regarding relevant incidents. Preparation and Regular Updating of an Official List of Journalists To ensure better coordination among journalists, the administration and police, the memorandum calls for the monthly review and updating of the list of journalists maintained by the District Information and Public Relations Office. It also proposes that the updated and verified list be made available at all departmental offices and police stations across the district. Emphasis on Journalists’ Safety and Freedom of the Press Journalists, regarded as the fourth pillar of democracy, play a vital role in highlighting public grievances, monitoring administrative activities and bringing social irregularities to light. The memorandum expresses hope that the administration will give due consideration to all four demands and take prompt and necessary steps to ensure journalists’ safety, dignity, professional freedom and access to essential facilities.
